All About Wide Plank Flooring
If you're considering genuine wood flooring for your home, consider a beautiful wide plank floor for unmatched beauty, durability and versatility. Wide plank flooring has been used here in New England for hundreds of years - the earliest settlers first used the plentiful pines of the Northeast to create solid, lasting floors that improved with use and age. In fact, many of the colonial homes still in existence throughout the region have original wide plank flooring.
Whether you want to recreate the classic craftsmanship and look of a colonial floor, or one more fitting for a modern room, we can help you find the right wood and the right finish to give you the floor of your dreams. We offer different grades to provide a clear, knot-free look and natural grades that give a more knotty look for a little more character.
Selecting the right wood
Different species of wood provide different colors, grains, textures, and finishes. The woods best suited for wide plank flooring are:
|
|
Traditional Looks
Pines, cherry and oak work best for more traditional looks, such as Georgian, colonial, or country homes. They tend to feature a more knotty appearance, warmer tones, and more pronounced grains.
Contemporary Looks
Maples, birch, hickory and walnut are all woods that work well for modern or contemporary decors. They often have tighter, less-pronounced grains and generally lighter looks better suited for the lighter, cleaner lines of contemporary furnishings.
Add character with the right treatment
Durable, beautiful, wide plank wood flooring can add a unique, individualized look to your home with one or more treatments that our craftsmen apply after the wood has been carefully milled here in our facility. By choosing or more of these treatments, you can recreate the look of a centuries old colonial home, a classic New England mill building floor, or a rustic country cabin.
Handwork
Early craftsmen used a variety of tools and techniques to create rugged, long-lasting floors, including scraping, planning, and edging. Each of these treatments replicates a process which created a slightly textured surface that resulted from smoothing plank surfaces and edges with hand tools.
Footwear
Nothing says authentic old flooring like the soft, broken-in look created over the years by foot traffic. We have tools to create the timeless look of a tavern floor or Early American kitchen.
Saw marks
Called "kerfs", these swirl marks were the result of early sawmilling techniques. This authentic treatment absorbs stains a little differently than the rest of the plank, resulting in a unique, custom look.
Wire-brushing
This subtle technique is used to "break-in" new flooring - taking the gloss off freshly milled planking and adding just a slightly worn texture to it. It is often used in combination with one or more of our other treatments to create a truly individual look for your wide plank flooring.
No matter what type of wood, treatment, or finish you select for your flooring, a wide plank floor will add beauty, durability, and value to your home.
